The Composition of E-Liquids
for Electronic Cigarettes
Â
A Detailed Analysis
E-liquids, or vaping liquids, are at the heart of the electronic cigarette experience. Their composition is standardized, mainly consisting of four or five basic ingredients, each playing an essential role in vapor production, flavor delivery, and nicotine intake. To understand what one inhales, it is crucial to analyze each of these components in detail.
I. The Base: Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG)
The base is the main ingredient of an e-liquid, generally representing between 80% and 95% of the total volume. It is composed of a mixture of Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin, whose proportions are crucial for determining the characteristics of the vaping experience. The most common ratio is often expressed as PG/VG (e.g., 50/50, 70/30, 30/70, etc.).
A. Propylene Glycol (PG)
Propylene Glycol is a colorless, odorless, and slightly viscous organic compound, classified as a food additive (E1520) and widely used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
Role in E-liquid:
Flavor Carrier: PG is an excellent solvent for flavors, ensuring good diffusion and perception of taste.
"Throat Hit": It is responsible for the tingling or constricting sensation in the throat, called "hit," sought by users wishing to simulate the sensation of a traditional cigarette.
Fluidity: PG makes the liquid more fluid, which is ideal for small coils and atomizers or MTL MTL (Mouth-To-Lung) systems systems).
Disadvantage: A high proportion (e.g., 70% or more) can sometimes be irritating to the throat for some people and tends to produce less vapor.
B. Vegetable Glycerin (VG)
Vegetable Glycerin (or Glycerol) is a viscous, transparent, and naturally sweet sugar alcohol, also used as a food additive (E422) and in many hygiene products.
Role in E-liquid:
Vapor Production: VG is the primary vaporization agent. It produces dense and abundant vapor, ideal for "power-vaping" or DL (Direct-Lung).
Smoothness: It provides a smoother texture to the vapor and reduces the intensity of the "throat hit."
Flavor: Its naturally sweet taste can slightly mask certain flavor nuances.
Disadvantage: Its high viscosity can clog atomizer coils more quickly and often requires more powerful vaping systems.
II. Flavors
Flavors are the ingredients that give e-liquids their unique taste (tobacco, fruit, gourmet, menthol, etc.). They generally represent only 5% to 15% of the total composition.
Nature of Flavors: These are food-grade flavors, but it is crucial that they are specifically formulated for inhalation. Reputable manufacturers use flavors that have been verified not to contain dangerous substances by inhalation, such as diacetyl, acetyl propionyl, aldehydes, or certain oils.
Importance of Certification: Standard food flavors are not always safe for vaping. The e-liquid industry has moved towards "vape-grade" flavors to ensure safety.
III. Nicotine (Optional)
Nicotine is the non-carcinogenic psychoactive ingredient present in e-liquids, which aims to satisfy the physical dependence of smokers and ex-smokers. Its concentration is expressed in milligrams per milliliter (mg/ml) and is regulated (maximum 20 mg/ml in Europe).
Forms of Nicotine:
Freebase Nicotine: This is the most common form, extracted from the tobacco plant. It is alkaline and contributes strongly to the "throat hit."
Nicotine Salts: This form is created by adding an organic acid to freebase nicotine. Salts are absorbed more quickly by the body and deliver high nicotine levels while producing a much smoother "hit," making them popular for smoking cessation.
Role: Nicotine acts as a stimulant and is the main factor that helps smokers switch to vaping, as it helps prevent withdrawal symptoms.
IV. Water and Alcohol (Ethanol)
In some cases, a very small proportion of purified (distilled) water or ethanol (alcohol) may be added.
Role: These solvents can be used to thin high-VG mixtures or to aid in the dissolution of certain particularly thick flavors. They also contribute to volatility, facilitating vaporization. Their presence is generally less than 5% of the total volume.
V. Prohibited and Avoided Substances
In conclusion, although the basic composition is simple, the quality and absence of controversial ingredients are paramount. Legislations (such as the TPD in Europe) prohibit the addition of:
Unspecified sugars and sweeteners.
Colorants (in some countries).
Caffeine, taurine, or other energizing additives.
Vitamins or any other additive giving the impression that the product has a health benefit.
In summary, an e-liquid is a simple solution composed of a PG/VG blend as a carrier, flavors for taste, and nicotine for physical delivery. Its simplicity ensures its transparency for the user.
